Today's talk is important if you are wanting to work with clients all over the country. It's really hard to do it if you don't nail this the right way. Today we are talking about testimonials. When to get them, what to say, the whole gamut.
Once you have put yourself in a position where you can work with people all over the planet, everything changes. If you are just in your local community, that's great. You can have a great life doing that. But once you get outside of those walls everything gets better and that's why we have the business that we have today. We have people that we work with all over the world. Now the question is, how do you do that? It's really difficult to cold approach someone that you're not a part of their community. When you are cold approaching someone you end up looking like an outsider who is just trying to take their money. Unless you have one of these magic things called a testimonial.
Getting a testimonial, at least for those that are brand new, it's one of the hardest things to do for some people. It's hard because you are asking for help. And asking someone to say something nice about you, it just doesn't feel natural. It feels awkward. It feels so unnatural. So how do you pull this off? And do it the right way?
For starters, if you have a really good testimonial that's very specific from a client, and it's got to be super specific, you can put that testimonial up on the web. That's the beauty of where we are today. Put it up on the web and now you can send this out, and if you do it the right way, then it absolutely pulls business your way. People will want to go out of their way to work with you, which is kind of cool.
When To Ask for a Testimonial
Knowing when to ask for a testimonial is a big question we get. And when you do it really depends on the industry. But, Ben is very big on getting the testimonial when we have that first big win. When you've, sent so many leads to a business, or when the business you are working with gets their first compliment on work you have been doing for them. Just when you have that first win together, and everyone has the feeling of this is working. That is the exact moment that Ben likes to ask for the testimonial.
How to ask for a Testimonial
Ben likes to say, “we want to grow our business, but I don't want to grow my business by going to your competitors. As you know, I only work with (dentists/chiropractors/fill in the blank here) I don't want to go to people in your area I want to focus 100% on this area for you. So how I get other people to be a part of our company and to work with us is to have a really good testimony that I can send to them. Could you help me with that? Let's talk about this specific result we got.” Typically, when you're in that honeymoon phase especially, they are more than happy to give you that testimonial.
How to Get the Actual Testimonial
Now, what do you do when you're asking them for the testimony? First of all, don't make a big production of it. Your client is busy, especially if you are doing your job. So you will want to go to them and take a phone with you, all phones now are pretty much set up for this. Walk in with your phone, brace your arm holding the cell phone against your side, hit record and ask a few questions. If you are unsure of what to ask, check out Ben's video How to do Testimonials and Reviews. Make sure you ask questions to them live. The best testimonials that we have ever seen have not been this big production with lots of edits. They have been literally someone behind the camera asking them questions and the client responding, very naturally. It works. You don't need to do a lot of editing, which is kind of nice. It's as simple as that.
The thing that separates the starting folks from the folks that have clients all over the pace that are super happy, is that they have these little weapons of these testimonials they can send out to get clients from all over.
